No matter how healthy our lifestyle and eating habits are, one can often find the stealthy flu playing havoc with the immune system of almost all individuals.

Research on Quercetin
High consumption of quercetin and having fewer colds have been linked together by the research conducted by researcher J. Mark Davis, PhD from University of South Carolina.

His anti-flu strategy strongly recommends loading up on quercetin-rich foods, besides staying away from those who are sick and being careful about hand washing.

Red onions are the best source of quercetin-rich foods. One can eat them raw or cooked, although cooking makes the antioxidant more readily absorbed.

Although flu cannot be avoided entirely, it is also true that a nutritious diet can help lessen the flu’s effects and duration.

Certain foods are known to strengthen our body’s immune system. When suffering from the flu, food is the last thing on a person’s mind. But opting for some proper foods can surely help them get rid of flu and regain their health.

Foods to Stay Well this Winter
Eat more apples, blueberries, broccoli, spinach, lettuce, and onions as they all contain quercetin, a powerful antioxidant known to reduce the risk of flu in mice.

Oatmeal, bananas, fish, chicken, turkey help maintain the health of organs that make infection-fighting white blood cells.

Drink Lots of Liquids
Water, soups, juices are very important during flu for they will help keep the body well hydrated.

Warm liquids like hot chicken broth are thought to be useful as they raise the temperature of the throat and help prevent the growth of virus.

Increase Intake of Vitamins
Vitamins are necessary to help individuals get the essential nutrients and minerals they need to stay healthy and fight flu.

Vitamin C and zinc are particularly recommended for flu sufferers, for they help to reduce congestion, relieve watery eyes, and minimize the disease’s duration.
