According to the study initiated by the Central Council for Research in Ayurveda and Siddha (CCRAS), Ayurveda enhances life of cancer
patients and also nullifies side effects of chemotherapy, a drug therapy used to stop cancer cells from multiplying.
CCRAS researchers, in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research, are developing AYUSH-QOL 2-A, an ayurvedic drug that enhances the quality of life (QOL).
“Some more drugs like AYUSH-C for cancer, AYUSH-Osto for osteoporosis and AYUSH-SL for filariasis are also under the process of development,” said Dr. G S Lavekar, director general of CCRAS.
It must be noted that a drug for the mentally retarded called AYUSH-MANAS is also being developed in collaboration with National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences in Bangalore and Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in New Delhi.
More research on Ayurveda on the anvil
The Advanced Cancer Therapy Research and Education Centre situated at Tata Cancer Hospital in Mumbai has also acknowledged the significance of Ayurveda in treating serious ailments like cancer.
“The city-based Central Research Institute for Ayurveda will be doing more research in the vector-borne diseases like malaria and filaria from its new campus to be re-named as National Research Institute in Ayurvedic Drug Development (NRIADD),” added Dr Lavekar.
A new research centre for Ayurveda indicates further possible developments in this ancient technique of treatment using herbs, and this current study has paved way for more research in Ayurveda.
Dr Lavekar concluded, “With more extensive research into Ayurveda through studies of ancient scriptures in various parts of Orissa and additional medico-botanical expeditions and ethno-anthropological studies, drugs can be developed for the common people.”
