Oily fish loaded with omega-3 fatty acids is known to influence the cognitive function in life after middle age. It can also affect the arrival of dementia and the severity of this disease.
Indian people bereft of oily fish
For the study purposes, 14,960 participants were taken into account. All these people aged 65 years or less and resided in China, India, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Mexico, and Peru.
The researchers found out that except the people who live in India, the participants of all the other countries benefit from the fish.
Associated studies
A study conducted some time back had revealed that the risk of developing dementia in later life, almost doubles in people who reside alone in middle age. This is in comparison to those people who are married or live with a partner.
The study results had implied that living with a partner can act as a guard against mental corrosion in later life.
Not only this, the researchers also discovered that people who go through middle age without anyone by their side and are widowed or divorced, have a three times higher probability of getting affected by dementia.
The risk is same in people who do not get married or do not have a partner in middle age.
But the study results differ as far as women are concerned. It was found that women have less chances of developing dementia as compared to men.
However, further research is needed to be done in order to specifically find out the dissimilarities in men and women in this regard.
Dementia
The word dementia basically means “deprived of mind”. It is a cognitive disorder which might occur due to a brain injury or can happen due to the progressive declining of memory as age increases.
Only some types of dementia are curable, but scientists are trying to find out ways that can help slow the development of untreatable types of dementia.
The new study has been published in the August 2009 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
