Pune, July 28: With more cases of swine flu among the school children surfacing in the city lately, a few schools affiliated to CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) and ICSE (Indian School Certificate Examination) in Pune have started taking precautionary measures against the epidemic.

The concerned school authorities have started circulating letters, informing the parents about the necessary measures and precautions to be taken in case their ward is affected. Many of the students studying in these schools are NRIs (non-resident Indian).

"Many parents have been inquiring about the safety measures being taken at the school to prevent the spread of H1N1 flu through the school. We have sent letters, giving helpline numbers and other details, to parents," said Nalini Sengupta, principal of ICSE school Vidya Valley.

Parents asked to produce medical reports
Parents have also been asked to produce medical reports of their wards, even those who are suffering from normal flu.

The letters sent also request for details of those students who have returned from abroad during the last 10 days, and that they should be quarantined at home for at least a period of seven days.

Neelam Chakrabarty, principal of DPS, Kondhwa, a CBSE school said, "Of the total 3,000 students in the school, around 10 percent are from abroad and for whom traveling abroad is routine during summer vacations.

“But, as all of them arrived long before the outbreak of the H1N1 flu in the city, we are not too apprehensive. Nevertheless, we have hired physicians to check our students and have been creating awareness among the pupils about the H1N1 flu."

Schools at a glance
Till date, four schools, i.e. Abhinav, Sevasadan, Symbiosis and New India School, have been closed due to the rapid spread of the H1N1 virus among school children in Pune in the past few weeks.

"We have at least 500 to 600 students who travel abroad every year during summer vacations. However, there have been no such visits by our students during the last one month.

"Moreover, we have sensitised the students' parents over the issue," said Jayashree Venkatraman, principal, Dayanand Anglo Vedic Public School, Aundh.

City's over-view
So far, 11 more students have been struck down with influenza in the city of Pune in the last 24 hours, taking the toll of H1N1-infected students in the city to 45.

A special control room has been set up in the city to monitor the increasing number of the flu cases.
