FDA approves drug for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder

Thomas Laughren, MD, Director of the division of psychiatry products in the FDA’s Centre for Drug Evaluation and Research, was quoted as saying, “Mental illnesses like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder can be devastating to patients and families, requiring lifelong treatment and therapy.”
He added, “Effective medicines can help people with mental illness live more independent lives.”
Clinical trials reveal effectiveness and side-effects of Saphris
The FDA consented on the use of Saphris after clinical trials showed that it is effective in reducing schizophrenia symptoms in adults.
Similar trials had also revealed that Saphris is better than a placebo or a fake pill in treating symptoms of bipolar disorder.
However, during the trial period, patients suffering from schizophrenia complained of some side-effects. The most common of these being, the inability to sit at one place or remain motionless, reduced oral sensitivity and lethargy.
As far as the side-effects experienced by patients treated for bipolar disorder go, sleepiness, giddiness, difficulty in movement, inability to sit motionless and weight gain were extremely experienced.
The FDA has warned that Saphris should not be used for treating behavioral problems in older people with dementia-related psychosis. A “black box” warning has been mentioned on all such anti-psychotic drugs so that they are not used without prescription.
Symptoms of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder
According to the FDA, noticeable symptoms of schizophrenia include listening voices or seeing things that are actually not present, having false notions like thinking that others are influencing your thoughts, reading your mind, or planning some harm and being doubtful or suspicious without any reason.
On the other hand, Bipolar I is a recurring serious psychiatric ailment that leads to frequent bouts of depression and anxiety. A person experiences racing thoughts and talks rapidly, demonstrates impulsive behavior, and a reduction in the requirement for sleep.
