Pune woman dies of H1N1, toll rises to 28

Pune, August 17: Giving sleepless nights to the health officials, swine flu deaths are on the rise. The total number of swine flu deaths in the country has risen to 28.

The latest to succumb to the lethal influenza is a 36-year-old Pune woman. According to the official sources, the woman, identified as Bina Gonsalves, died of swine flu in Sassoon hospital in Pune late last night.

With this latest fatality, the death toll due to the swine flu in Pune has risen to 18.

According to the Ministry of Health, earlier fresh 152 cases were reported in the nation. With this, the total number of positive cases has mounted to 1,707 across the country.

Of the 152 fresh H1N1 cases, the financial capital Mumbai reported a total of 60 new confirmed cases, followed by Pune with 18, Delhi and Chennai 11 each, Coimbatore and Bangalore 10 each, Aurangabad 9, Mangalore and Ernakulam 3 each, Davangere, Akola and Jalna 2 each, and one each in Ahmadnagar, Solapur, Latur, Nagpur, Jalgaon, Dhule, Belgaum, Hubli, Hrudalaya (Karnataka), Dibrugarh and Shimla.

Of the 28 deaths reported in the country so far, Pune reported 16, Bangalore 5, Mumbai 2, and Ahmedabad, Chennai, Nashik, Thiruvananthapuram and Vadodara reported one each.

15 deaths in Maharashtra
According to State Health Secretary Bhusan Gagrani, in the state of Maharashtra, approximately 109 swine flu patients are undergoing treatment and another 403 suspected patients are under observation at various identified health clinics and hospitals.

He confirmed the number of deaths reported due to swine flu in the state so far to be 15. As many as 2,57,128 people have been screened in the state so far, of which 12,499 patients were administered Tamiflu tablets.

Mr. Gagrani also said that the state government has a stock of 6,78,000 Tamiflu tablets along with N-95 masks available with themselves.
