Kerala swine flu infections 199, Indian fatalities 100

Kerela, September 1 -- With eight new cases being reported from the various parts of the state, the tally of those infected by the dreaded swine flu virus has touched 199 in Kerela. The influenza has claimed three lives in the state so far.

The latest infections include two cases each from the districts of Kottayam and Thrissur, and one confirmed case in Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Kozhikode and Kannur districts each.

The health authorities have upped the ante on preventive measures. As many as 7847 passengers who arrived at the three airports in the state were screened for the virus on Saturday itself. Additionally, 63 persons were screened in the hospitals, stated a release from the Directorate of Health Services.

Out of the total screened, throat swabs of 16 suspected patients were sent to the Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, while the samples of another 23 suspected cases were sent to the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology in the national capital Delhi.

Maharashtra worst hit
The swine flu virus accounted for four more deaths on Monday, taking the death toll to three digits in the country.

Out of these 100 deaths, 55 deaths have been recorded in the state of Maharashtra, which has been the worst hit by the pandemic.

Maharashtra also accounted for three of the latest four deaths reported on Monday. Two swine flu victims passed away in Mumbai while another one passed away in Pune. The fourth fatality was reported from Bangalore.

Another 106 fresh cases of the swine flu were reported from various parts of the country on Monday. Again, Maharashtra tops the list of highest infections and deaths due to the influenza.

Out of the latest 106 infections, 48 were reported from Maharashtra state alone. Approximately 1639 infections have been reported from the state so far, which represents 41 percent of the total infections in the country.

Delhi with 655 infections follows Maharashtra.

India is still safely placed as compared to some of the other countries of the world.

According to the latest figures available with the central government, 21,937 people have been tested for influenza A (H1N1) in various government laboratories across the country and 3,987 of them have been found positive.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) reveals that over 209,438 lab confirmed swine flu cases have been reported worldwide till Friday. The lethal influenza has sniffed lives out of 2,100 people globally, primarily in Mexico and the United States.
