Satyam's Ramalinga Raju suffers cardiac arrest
On complaints of chest pain, Raju was initially attended by jail doctors.
"The prison doctor was immediately called in and after examining Ramalinga Raju, the doctor suggested to shift him to a hospital," said Chanchalguda Jail Superintendent M. Chandrasekhar.
Various tests conducted
Raju was brought to NIMS at around 4.45 p.m. and was later shifted to the hospital's ICU at 8 p.m. Various tests were conducted on him including an ECG and Echo Cardiogram, to detect the cause of pain and discomfort in the chest.
Following a preliminary examination, he was shifted to the ICCU for further tests and treatment.
"We are evaluating his condition which is stable right now and all the vital parameters are under control. Cardiologists are evaluating the reports of the tests conducted so far. The cause of the pain will be known after all the tests are fully evaluated," stated the Resident Medical Officer of NIMS M. Srinivas.
Giving some insight into his medical condition, Dr Srinivas said Raju was suffering from Heptatits C infection and had a mild chest infection. However, his condition was stable and he just requires rest for a long period.
The hospital sources said that he will be kept under observation for a few days and an angiogram will be performed on him soon.
Raju's lawyer’s version of events
Raju's lawyer Bharat Kumar told reporters that his client suffered a heart attack at around 4.30 p.m., and when his condition deteriorated he was hospitalized.
He further added, “He was taken twice to NIMS over the past 10 days for treatment of type C hepatitis.
“A medical board constituted by the state government examined him and recommended treatment for a couple of months. He had blocks in his arteries, but was unable to take medicines as he was suffering from liver disorder.”
Raju is enjoying VIP status in the intensive care unit at the NIMS hospital. The city police and the staff of the Chanchalguda jail are part of his security.
Raju in custody for fraud
On Jan. 7 this year Raju admitted that Satyam’s books were fudged, resulting in Rs.8,000 crore fraud. The confession had shocked the corporate world back then.
He and his brother have been charged with cheating, forgery, and criminal conspiracy, and are under judicial custody at the Chanchalguda jail for the past eight months.
