India swine flu death toll 138

New Delhi, September 9 -- India is slowly but surely sinking into the quagmire of the dreaded swine flu virus. Three more deaths were reported in the country on Tuesday, taking the tally of H1N1 casualties to 138.

As many as 245 fresh swine flu infections were also reported from various parts of the country taking the total number of infected to 5,221.

“Till date, samples from 26,037 people have been tested for influenza A (H1N1) in various government and private laboratories across the country and 5,221 of them have been found positive,” a health ministry statement revealed.

The latest infections
All the latest three deaths were reported from the state of Maharashtra, which already tops the charts in the country both in terms of swine flu deaths as well as infections.

One more death has reportedly occurred in Gujarat. However, it is yet to be confirmed whether swine flu was the cause of the death.

In a marked departure from the trend, the state reported only two fresh infections out of the total 245 reported in the country.

Delhi reported as many as 84 infections on Tuesday. Tamil Nadu reported 38 fresh cases of the influenza while Haryana reported 27 cases. 22 fresh cases were also reported from Uttar Pradesh, while another 17 cases of H1N1 were reported from Karnataka.

The northern most parts of the country reported 27 cases. 14 people were tested positive for the influenza in Jammu province while another 13 tested positive in the Kashmir valley.

The scenario in Delhi
Out of the latest 84 infections in the national capital, 38 are children. The latest infections take the count of H1N1 infections in Delhi to 6 shy of the 1000 mark.

16 of the latest victims in Delhi have been admitted to various hospitals, while the rest have been advised home quarantine.

"A total of 994 samples tested positive for swine flu till date. Of these, 846 have been treated and discharged, while 147 cases are undergoing treatment at various hospitals," Delhi health minister Kiran Walia said.

The health minister assured that the situation was under control and that “government is doing its best in providing treatment to H1N1 patients in government hospitals.”

The contagious virus has also sniffed life out of 4 people in Delhi.
