It has been known for sometime that the length of the baby’s fingers is influenced by its exposure to the sex hormone, testosterone, in the womb.
A ring finger outstretching the index finger is an indication of high prenatal testosterone exposure, which in turn has a significant effect on both the health and behavior of men in later years.
Study on length of fingers conducted
Researchers from the University of Mainz, in Germany, recruited 77 male drivers with an average age of 38 years.
The team then used a finger size indicator to scan the left hands of the subjects to measure the difference in length between the ring and index fingers.
Details of the driving offences committed by the subjects over the past five years were then registered. The results showed that nearly a third of the drivers had penalty points on their licenses, ranging from one to 20. The common offences were speeding and driving under the influence of liquor.
From the information gathered, the researchers concluded that men with a long ring finger were booked for breaking more traffic rules.
The researchers said: "A longer ring finger than index finger was related to more traffic violations. Hormone exposure in the womb might increase traffic violations in later life."
Finger length highlights personality traits
Numerous studies have shown that men with a ring finger that is longer than the index finger display more aggression, visual vigilance, strong reflexes, extreme confidence and willingness to engage in substantial risk taking.
They are better at sports like athletics and football, more fertile and extremely successful in financial dealings as compared to men with shorter ring fingers.
The results of the study are published in the journal Accident Analysis and Prevention.
