13 more succumb to H1N1 in India, death toll 277
According to an official statement, 13 more H1N1 fatalities surfaced on Thursday. Four deaths occurred in Maharashtra (1 each in Pune, Nashik, Mumbai and Nagpur). With these deaths, the swine flu toll in Maharashtra has risen to 112, the highest in the country.
Three fell prey to the deadly disease in Karnataka (two in Bangalore and one in Updupi), taking the pandemic’s toll in the state to 85.
Two more swine flu deaths were reported from Hyderabad. In addition, the demise of three people from Andhra Pradesh and one from Uttarakhand have also been confirmed as H1N1 related deaths after the receipt of their laboratory tests.
Since the outbreak of the flu, the mortality figures in the rest of the country show that 28 people have died in Andhra Pradesh, 26 in Gujarat, 9 in Delhi, 4 in Kerala, 3 each in Tamil Nadu and Goa, 2 in Haryana and Uttarakhand and 1 each in Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.
New cases of H1N1 virus detected
Around 283 confirmed cases of the virus were reported on Thursday across the nation taking the total number to 8979. The capital reported 103 cases, Andhra Pradesh 43 cases and Tamil Nadu 34 cases of the influenza.
In addition, the 25 new cases surfaced in Haryana, 22 in Karnataka, 8 in Uttar Pradesh, 6 in Kerala, 3 in Goa, 2 in Gujarat and 1 each in Chandigarh and Chhattisgarh.
H1N1 related deaths worldwide in the past week
The H1N1 related fatalities globally in the past week were 442. The most affected country was Brazil, which accounted for 176 new deaths. The second highest was India with 66 deaths, followed by 59 fatalities in the United States (including Puerto Rico).
Elsewhere, Colombia confirmed 20 new deaths and South Africa 16 more. Twelve people succumbed to the virus in Peru and 11 in Thailand.
The dead count in the rest of the world: Mexico (9), Spain (6), Bolivia (6), Oman (5), Costa Rica (4), Dominican Republic (4), Australia (3), United Kingdom (3, French Territories (3), Canada (3), Vietnam (3), Taiwan (3), Hong Kong (3), South Korea (2), Japan (2), Malaysia (2), Saudi Arabia (2), Iran (2), El Salvador (2), Nicaragua (2), Netherlands (2), Greece (1), Italy (1), Israel (1), Norway (1), Kuwait (1), Yemen (1), Malta (1).
Mozambique, Luxembourg and Solomon Islands also announced their very first H1N1 deaths.
