The number of infected people rose to 10,375, with 142 fresh cases detected from across the nation.
The latest case in the capital is that of an eight-month-old baby boy who fell prey to the virus. The baby was admitted in Hindu Rao Hospital in critical condition on Monday and breathed his last on Tuesday night because of respiratory failure. The baby’s samples tested positive for the influenza Thursday.
"The baby was brought to the hospital very late and was immediately put on the ventilator. We have been asking people who are in the high risk category to report early.
“Parents should be more careful and if their children show any swine flu like symptoms then the matter should be reported immediately to the nearby hospital. Any delay can prove fatal,'' said Dr Anjan Prakash, additional nodal officer, Delhi government.
With the demise of the infant, the fatalities from H1N1 in the capital rose to 12.
Giving an update on the swine flu scenario in the capital, the health minister Kiran Walia stated, "A total of 51 positive cases of H1N1 Influenza have been identified today. 2,790 positive cases of swine flu virus have been identified here till date and 1467 cases were of children alone. Almost 90 per cent of the patients have been successfully treated and discharged for home."
Maharashtra the hardest hit state by H1N1Influenza
The hardest hit state is Maharashtra with its two mega-cities, Mumbai and Pune, accounting for the maximum number of victims.
Although only three people succumbed to the lethal disease Thursday in Maharashtra, the seven deaths reported in the state between Sept. 26 and 29 were also related to H1N1, stated health officials.
"The laboratory confirmation came Thursday, which showed that all these deaths were because of the flu," an official said.
With these ten deaths, the toll in the state is the highest in the nation, touching 130.
State wise update on the virus
In Andhra Pradesh, two people died of the virus on Wednesday but the laboratory confirmation came the following day. With these two fatalities, the death toll of the state touched 36.
In addition, Gujarat reported three suspected deaths from the disease though confirmation of test reports is still awaited.
According to official reports, “Till date, samples from 43,421 people have been tested for Influenza A (H1N1) in government laboratories and a few private laboratories across the country and 10,375 of them have been found positive.”
Meanwhile, fresh cases of infection were reported from Tamil Nadu (18), Karnataka (12), Haryana (12), Andhra Pradesh (10), Kerala (nine), Uttar Pradesh (six) and Gujarat (one).
