2 more succumb to swine flu; death toll 415

New Delhi, October 20 -- Two more persons succumbed to the lethal swine flu virus Monday taking the tally of death toll to 415 in the country.

One swine flu death was reported from Maharashtra while the other was reported from Solan in Himachal Pradesh, the first in the northern hill state of India.

Death toll break-up across states
With the latest death on Monday, the death toll in Maharashtra, the worst hit state, has now risen to 178. Karnataka has reported 112 deaths due to the influenza.

42 people have succumbed to the virus in Andhra Pradesh, 38 in Gujarat and 15 in Delhi. The H1N1 has sniffed life out of 11 people in Kerala, 4 in Tamil Nadu, 4 in Haryana, 3 each in Goa and Uttarakhand and 2 in Uttar Pradesh.

The states of Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan have reported one death each due to the dreaded virus.

A suspected swine flu death was reported from Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh and one was reported from the national capital Delhi. However, the test results of the victims have not been received as yet and hence these deaths have not been added to the state and national tally.

Infections rise to 12,880
As many as 93 fresh laboratory-confirmed cases of swine flu were also reported from various parts of the country taking the count of infections to 12,880.

Of the latest 93 cases, 33 were reported from Kerala, 10 from Delhi, 16 from Karnataka, 18 from Tamil Nadu, and 5 from Andhra Pradesh.

The latest afflictions include 7 persons with a history of foreign travel, while the rest are indigenous cases.

Maharashtra persists to top the swelling infection tally with 3,472 influenza A cases being reported from the state. Delhi comes a close second with 3,271 swine flu infections.

”Till date, samples from 68003 persons have been tested for swine flu and 18.9 per cent of them have been found to be positive,” stated an official of the Union Health Ministry.

First death in Himachal Pradesh
The swine flu accounted for the first death in Himachal when Dina Gupta, a 48-year-old housewife from Solan, was declared H1N1 positive posthumously at PGI Chandigarh.

The victim had reported flu-like symptoms on Oct. 11, but a sample for the swine flu test was taken on the morning of Oct. 18.

The attending husband as well as other attendants of the patient have been isolated and are being given contact treatment.
