The first death in the country was reported on Aug.3 when 14-year-old Rida Sheikh succumbed to the lethal H1N1 in Pune. Ever since the swine flu fatality count has steadily risen in the country with each passing day.
State-wise death toll
Of the latest deaths, Maharashtra, the worst hit state in the country due to the virus, accounted for 11 deaths. Some of these deaths had occurred earlier but were confirmed as swine flu deaths on Sunday. The death toll in the state has now inched up to 185, the highest in the country.
The state of Karnataka with 112 swine flu deaths follows Maharashtra. Andhra Pradesh has accounted for 46 swine flu deaths while 39 people have lost their lives in Gujarat due to the pandemic flu.
The influenza has sniffed life out of 15 people in Delhi, 14 in Kerela and 6 in Tamil Nadu. 4 deaths each have been reported from the states of Goa and Haryana, while 3 deaths each have been reported from the states of Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.
Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Orrisa, Mizoram, Punjab and Rajasthan have all reported one death each due to the virus.
Infection count is 13,370
49 fresh cases of people infected with the influenza were also reported on Sunday from various parts of the country. With this, the tally of people infected with the highly communicable virus has gone up to 13,370 nationwide.
Of the latest 49 infections, 15 alone were reported from the southern state of Karnataka. 13 infections were reported from the national capital Delhi, 10 from Maharashtra, 5 from Kerala, 2 each from Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh and 1 from Haryana.
None of the latest 49 infections had a travel history. All the cases reported Sunday are indigenous cases.
“Till date, samples from 70,650 people have been tested for swine flu and 18.9 per cent of them have been found to be positive,” as mentioned in a statement issued by the health ministry.
