There are a number of methods and techniques available that promise to eliminate the snoring problems, but most do nothing more than pushing them aside for the time being. Surgery is one option, but it works for only a few patients and is expensive.
Now, Dr. Hadi Al-Jassim, an ear, nose and throat specialist, from Southport and Ormskirk NHS Trust near Liverpool with his team of consultants is offering a £3 injection that takes just two minutes to administer.
The procedure, while providing a genuine alternative to painful surgery, promises a healthier and revitalized lifestyle by banishing the snoring from your sleep for the rest of your life.
Dr. Al-Jassim explains, "The injection is cheap for the NHS to use and it is effective. I am delighted with the treatment because, until this, there has been no effective treatment other than surgery."
The new procedure
The treatment, known as Snoreplasty, is performed under local anesthesia
. It involves the inoculation of sodium tetradecyl into the roof of the mouth.
The chemical prevents the soft tissue at the back of the mouth from vibrating by acting as a hardening agent and in the bargain combats the snoring.
Al-Jassim stated, "As everyone knows, snoring can cause major problems for patients and in particular their partners.
"In most cases it's the men who snore and their partners suffer sleep deprivation and at the end of the day you have to keep your partner happy – though women do snore as well.
"It causes all sorts of problems between partners and leads to marital, social and health problems.”
Treatment safe, painless, and effective
The facility available only in Britain promises to stop the snoring in people for nearly a year. While some people require a single dose annually, others may need the injection more often. However, the doctors claim it is safe to administer three shots annually.
Dr. Al-Jassim has treated around 400 patients and nearly 70 percent state the treatment eliminated the snoring. Those whose snoring has not been cured confess to sleeping better.
Dr. Al-Jassim is now educating other specialists across the country about the injection. He declared, “Surgical treatment is very painful and takes weeks of recovery time so many patients decide not to do it because they can't get the time off work or their health's not strong enough for surgery.
“However, after the jab, patients can go home straight away and eat about an hour later.”
Hidden health hazards of snoring
Being sleep-deprived is not the only health problem associated with regular nightly snoring.
According to the NHS, snoring may be a sign of dangerous health hazard sleep apnoea, a condition where blocked airways cause breathing to stop for seconds, resulting in wakefulness.
