The teenager, a student of class 7, was a hostler in Sant Nikka Singh Model School in Karnal.
She was rushed to the PGI the day before in a critical condition. However, the girl breathed her last before the arrival of her tests reports which confirmed the case as H1N1.
“Shrishti was brought to Chandigarh Friday and was admitted here at PGIMER (Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research) in a very serious condition. We immediately sent her nasal and throat swab samples for tests and her report came positive,” said H.C. Gera, nodal officer for swine flu.
Girl also suffering from other ailments
According to the health officials, Shrishti had been indisposed for nearly three weeks. Initially, she had some skin problem and was sent home by the school authorities.
However, ten days later she returned only to exhibit swine flu symptoms. The school reportedly sent her home again when they found her running high fever.
In complete disregard of the prevailing pandemic, the family got treatment at a private clinic. “Neither the school nor the family informed us. They continued treatment at a private clinic. And when her condition deteriorated, she was referred to PGI,” stated Charanjeet Choudhary, Karnal swine flu nodal officer.
Precautionary measures undertaken
Dr Choudhary disclosed that her school has been closed for a week. While 35 hostellers have been screened, no samples were collected as none of the inmates exhibited flu-like symptoms.
The family members of the girl, including some relatives in Sector 23, have been quarantined. Gera stated that the health officials were closely monitoring the condition of all those in close contact with the victim.
He stated, “We quarantined the victim’s family and relatives immediately after the cremation. All are under observation and required medical treatment is being given.”
Swine flu update from tri-city

The second victim, a 48-year-old woman Vinu Gupta hailing from Solan, had died at Silver Oaks Hospital in Mohali.
