2 more H1N1 deaths take tally to 477

<strong>New Delhi, November 4 --</strong> The relentless rampage of the current H1N1 monster shows no sign of abating with two more succumbing to the lethal virus Tuesday, taking the total number of fatalities in the nation to 477.

New Delhi, November 4 -- The relentless rampage of the current H1N1 monster shows no sign of abating with two more succumbing to the lethal virus Tuesday, taking the total number of fatalities in the nation to 477.

In addition, 76 fresh cases surfaced from across the country, raising the figure of those infected by the virus to 14,049. With the exception of seven cases linked to foreign travel the remaining are indigenous.

Of the new cases reported, 23 are from Karnataka, followed closely by the capital which registered 22 cases of the influenza. Cases were also reported from Tamil Nadu (16) Maharashtra (12), Goa (2) and Kerala (1).

H1N1 update in Maharashtra and Kerala
The latest victim of H1N1 includes one from Maharashtra, the worst hit state in the country. With the new casualty, the deaths tally in the state has climbed to 204.

The state accounts for 4,219 confirmed cases of the virus, out of which 3,976 got cured and discharged. Till date, Maharashtra has tested around 12,72,119 people for the influenza with 64,366 suspected patients being administered Tamiflu.

According to health officials presently 235 patients, including 39 positive cases and 196 suspected cases, are under medical intervention in different hospitals. Ten patients in critical condition are on ventilators.

The second death was reported from Kerala, taking the number of fatalities in the state to 16. After a surge of cases in the past two weeks, with nearly 20 cases emerging daily, there was a decline on Tuesday with only a single positive case being registered.

Currently, the number of swine flu cases in the state stands at 1121.

Flu count worldwide
There was a spurt in the number of swine flu deaths globally in the past week. A total of 535 people fell prey to the lethal disease in 51 nations, registering a rise of 49 percent in the death toll as opposed to the previous week.

The U.S. was the hardest hit, reporting 197 new H1N1 deaths in 38 states including Puerto Rico in the past seven 7 days. Vermont also confirmed a swine flu death.

Fatalities were widespread with 40 nations reporting swine flu deaths. Mexico had 56 casualties, India confirmed 28 deaths, South Korea added 15, while Saudi Arabia reported 23 new deaths. Canada and Italy accounted for 12 and 10 H1N1 deaths respectively.

In addition, swine flu deaths emerged in Spain (9), Argentina (8), Kuwait (7), Thailand (6), France (6), Iran (6), Israel (5), Guatemala (5), Ecuador (5), Syria (5), China (4), Vietnam (4), Netherlands (4), Germany (3), Norway (3), Hong Kong (3), Yemen (3), Bulgaria (3), Egypt (3), Jordan (2), Portugal (2), Venezuela (2), Honduras (2), Belgium (2), Taiwan (1), Oman (1), Lebanon (1), Qatar (1), Ireland (1), Cambodia (1), and Australia (1).

H1N1-related casualties were also reported from Ukraine (22), Russia (12), Turkey (9), Mongolia (6), São Tomé & Príncipe (2), Afghanistan (1), Croatia (1), Moldova (1), and Finland (1).

Tajikistan and Nigeria both announced their first positive H1N1 infection.
