H1N1 death toll 1082 in India
Twelve more succumbed to the deadly influenza Tuesday, with 11 from the state of Gujarat alone. Of the deaths from Gujarat, two were reported Tuesday while nine had happened earlier but were only confirmed yesterday.
With the new fatalities from Gujarat a total of 163 people have fallen prey to the lethal virus in the state.
In addition, one fatality was also reported from Rajasthan.
Children hit hard in the capital
Delhi reported eight new cases of swine flu Tuesday. With the fresh cases, the capital has, so far, witnessed 9,570 infections from the virus with children being the most vulnerable, accounting for nearly 60 percent of the contagion.
Anjana Prakash, Delhi's deputy nodal officer for swine flu, declared, “Of the eight cases, five are children. Yes, children are the worst sufferers. But fortunately the number of cases is going down and winter may be the reason behind it.”
New infections across the country
Also, 83 new cases of the infection surfaced across the country, taking the total number of persons hit by the contagious flu to 27,901. Of these, Gujarat reported 33 cases, Maharashtra 28, Karnataka 15, Rajasthan 11, Madhya Pradesh 4, Chhattisgarh 2 and Punjab 1.
According to an official statement, “Till date, samples from 117,943 people have been tested for Influenza A (H1N1) in government laboratories and a few private laboratories across the country and 27,901 of them have been found positive.”
H1N1 update worldwide
According to latest reports on H1N1 by World Health Organization, as on 8 Jan., 12,799 persons have succumbed to the lethal virus from more than 208 countries and overseas territories/communities.
Around 2078 deaths have been confirmed from 31 European countries. Eastern Mediterranean zone reported 140 deaths in Islamic Republic of Iran, 110 in Syrian Arab Republic, 97 in Saudi Arabia, 89 in Egypt, 50 in Morocco, 40 in Iran, 30 in Oman, and 28 in Yemen and Palestine.
Additionally, 27 persons died from H1N1 in Kuwait, 19 in Jordan, 15 in Tunisia, 14 in Pakistan and Afghanistan, 7 in Bahrain, 6 in UAE, 5 in Lebanon and one each in Libyan Arab Jamahiriya and Qatar.
