India’s H1N1 death count 1,113

New Delhi, January 16 -- India continues to reel under the outbreak of the pandemic H1N1 virus that has sniffed life out of 1,113 people in the country so far, claiming five more lives Friday.

Of these fatalities, three deaths were reported from the state of Gujarat, while New Delhi and Maharashtra accounted for one death each.

Latest cases of the contagion
The highly infectious virus continued to circulate unabated and inflicted 64 persons on the same day, taking the tally of swine flu positive cases to 28,111 in the country.

The fresh cases of the swine flu infection reported across different parts of the country were as follows: 27 in Maharashtra, 11 in Karnataka, eight in Gujarat, five in Madhya Pradesh, four each in Delhi and Chandigarh, two in Rajasthan and one each in Kerala, Punjab and Goa.

National capital under H1N1 trap
With the death of a 55-year-old woman reported from New Delhi on Friday, the death count due to the contagious virus reached 89 in the city, health officials said.

“A woman died at the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital today. With this, the deaths from the swine flu infection in the city have reached 89,” Anjana Prakash, assistant nodal officer for swine flu in the capital was quoted by IANS as saying.

Apart from the swine flu deaths, four new cases of the contagion were also reported in the city on Friday, taking the cumulative swine flu infections count to 9,584.

State-wise death count
In the state of Maharashtra—the epicenter of swine flu outbreak in India—298 people have lost their lives, highest death count in the country so far.

With 27 fresh swine flu cases, the number of people inflicted with the infection has risen to 4848 in the state.

After Maharashtra, the states to have recorded the maximum number of swine flu deaths are; Gujarat with 173 deaths, Rajasthan 170 and Karnataka 137.

The total swine flu deaths in other states are: 89 in Delhi, 52 in Andhra Pradesh, 37 in Punjab, 33 in Haryana, 14 in Madhya Pradesh, 13 in Uttarakhand, eight each in Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh, seven in Tamil Nadu, six in Puducherry, five in Goa, three in Orissa, two each in Assam, Jammu & Kashmir and Chhattisgarh and one in Mizoram.

Global toll
According World Health Organization (WHO), the lethal H1N1 influenza is spreading most profusely in North Africa, Asia and parts of Europe.

Until now, nearly 14,000 people worldwide have succumbed to the deadly influenza.

“Pandemic H1N1 2009 virus continues to be the predominant circulating influenza virus in the European region with only sporadic detections of seasonal influenza viruses," the WHO said.
