Of these fatalities, four deaths were reported from Chattisgarh, while Maharashtra accounted for two deaths and a single fatality was reported in Gujarat.
Latest cases of the contagion
The highly infectious virus continued to circulate unabated and inflicted 39 persons on the same day, taking the tally of laboratory confirmed cases to 28,551 in the country.
The fresh cases of the swine flu infection reported across different parts of the country were as follows: 14 in Gujarat, 12 in Maharashtra, five in Delhi, four in Rajasthan and one each was reported in Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
State-wise death count
In the state of Maharashtra—the epicenter of swine flu outbreak in India—310 people have lost their lives; highest death count in the country so far.
After Maharashtra, states to have recorded the maximum number of swine flu deaths are; Gujarat with 212 deaths, Rajasthan 174 and Karnataka 141.
The total swine flu deaths in other states are: 90 in Delhi, 52 in Andhra Pradesh, 38 in Punjab, 36 in Kerala, 33 in Haryana, 19 in Madhya Pradesh, 18 in Uttar Pradesh, 13 in Uttarakhand, 8 each in Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh, 7 in Tamil Nadu, 6 each in Chhattisgarh and Puducherry, 5 in Goa, 3 in Orissa, 2 each in Assam and Jammu & Kashmir and 1 in Mizoram.
Global toll
According to the World Health Organization, (WHO) nearly 14,142, people worldwide have succumbed to the lethal virus so far.
The greatest number of swine flu related fatalities, nearly 7,094 deaths, have been reported in the United States since the virus first appeared in Mexico—the epicenter of last year’s swine flu outbreak.
On the other hand, 3,099 people have lost their lives in Europe and at least 2,877 in the east Asia and Pacific region, WHO said.
