Researchers at the University of Oklahoma (OU) have found that a supplement containing black pepper, caffeine and capsaicin-- a component of chili peppers help in weight-reduction by destroying as many calories as a 20-minute walk would do.
Joel T. Cramer, assistant professor of exercise physiology, OU Health and Exercise Science Department said, “The OU study showed energy expenditures of three to six percent, results which are statistically significant enough to validate product weight-loss claims.”
Details of the study
The OU in a formal agreement with General Nutrition Centers (GNC) tested the weight-loss benefits of the nutritional supplement called the tri-pepper blend.
The research team conducted the study on 28 healthy people in their 20s. The subjects were given the tri-pepper supplement or panacea, and subsequent tests were performed to check their metabolism.
The team gauged the processes of inhaling of oxygen, and exhaling carbon dioxide by the subjects, to verify their metabolic rates subsequent to taking the supplements.
The researchers established that the weight-loss supplement produced fruitful results, and was practicable.
The scientists found out that the basis of weight-reduction through the supplement is that the spice pills suggested to heighten the energy levels.
“However, the study focuses on how the supplement-- when combined with exercise-- seems to boost energy consumption,” said the study authors.
The details of the study appear in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research.
How does the supplement work?
The pill contains 200 mg of caffeine, 0.67 mg of 100,000 scoville capsaicin, 20 mg of niacin, and 5 mg of bio perine.
200 mg of caffeine is a significant amount, and has more potential than a 16oz energy drink, around 2.5 espressos, and an equal amount of a pill of NoDoz. The pill equates for around two-thirds of caffeine consumption suggested for an individual for the day.
Though, taking the pill boosts energy expenses, heart rate, and oxygen use, which can be measured up to a 20 minute walk, researchers caution that it is not precisely a medication you could take every hour to lose weight.
The OU has also bonded with the nutritional supplement industry to offer support required for product expansion, through research.
With increased funds, the department can conduct an increased number of nutritional studies, which can supply the industry with essential information.
