Ten Good Habits for a Healthy Skin
Our skin is like a mirror. It reflects exactly what we are from within. Our lifestyle, good or bad habits, mental state, everything becomes evident on our exterior self.
A Spoonful From Your Kitchen for Glowing Skin
Use the following ingredients from your kitchen to care for your skin:
Dry Skin: Honey, curd, egg yolk
Oily Skin: Gram flour, lemon juice, egg white
Normal Skin: Papaya, banana
Natural Bleach: Potato, cucumber juice, tomato
Acne Prone Skin: Neem paste, turmeric paste
Being a doctor, I cannot help myself talking about the medical aspects of this amazingly wonderful organ. To most people’s astonishment, not heart, not lungs, not liver, but skin is the largest organ of body. It protects our vital internal organs from coming in direct contact with the external environment. Also, it prevents us from severe sun damage.
Hence, it is extremely important to pay attention and keep our skin as healthy as possible. Here are the 10 commandments for a beautiful skin:
1. Regular Skincare Regimen
First and foremost, follow the age-old golden rule of cleaning-toning-moisturizing.
At least twice in a day, clean the face with a mild face wash, tighten your pores with the help of a toner, and finally massage for couple of minutes with a moisturizer suitable for your skin type.
2. Protection from Sun
Sun is our lifeline. But it doesn’t get along too well with our skin. Most of the skin-related problems like early ageing, dullness, dryness, rashes, brown spots, and untimely wrinkles are all results of over exposure to the harsh UV rays.
Never step out of your house without applying a sun block of at least 15 SPF. Try to cover all the exposed body parts or else carry an umbrella.
3. Water Intake
No matter what, drink a minimum of eight to ten glasses of water per day. To keep the skin hydrated and to maintain its elasticity, sufficient water intake is must.
Apart from fluid intake, also eat a lot of fruits such as water melon, musk melon, cucumber, lettuce etc.
4. Exercise
A regular workout not only helps you in keeping fit but, as an added benefit, works wonders for your skin as well. Exercising boosts blood circulation, improves the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the skin, and makes it glow.
5. Eat Right
A healthy looking skin needs a lot of omega-3 fatty acids. Fish, red vegetables, citrus fruits, berries, and nuts are a very good source of omega-3 fatty acids.
Say goodbye to junk food and oily stuff.
6. Enough Sleep
For a clear and fresh looking skin, sleeping seven to eight hours is essential. It relaxes your mind, which shows on your skin.
7. Moisturizing
After washing your face before going to bed, apply a good night-cream liberally on your face, neck, hands, and feet. This is the best time when your cream gets to seep in deep inside your skin and brings out best results.
8. No To Smoking
Smoking is not only bad for lungs but also takes a toll on your skin. It narrows the blood vessels, following which skin does not receive sufficient amount of oxygen and nutrients, and results in looking dull and lifeless. Such skin also ages fast.
9. Remove Makeup
It is very important to remove every trace of makeup before going to sleep. Most of the makeup materials contain chemicals, which if left for longer period (overnight), can prove extremely harmful.
10. No Stress
Last but not the least, stress is your skin’s silent killer. It shows very badly on your skin if you are stressed for a longer period of time. So, even if you had an awful day, just try to relax and de-stress for the sake of your skin.
Although God has made our skin quite resilient to the harsh external environment, regular care and attention is much needed to retain its natural radiance.
Beauty is skin deep. Indeed.
