The technique involves the injection of the patient’s own body fat and is much more effective than the usual procedure of introducing fillers or implants.
The researchers claim that the surgery can also help defy aging signs in women by making the lips appear fuller and younger.
25 patients studied
The team looked at 25 patients who were given the lip graft treatment which used their neck muscles to enhance their lip appearance.
The patients were administered segments of the sternocleidomastoid muscle which is a neck muscle and a connective tissue overlying it.
One of the patients was given a further plump using a gel treatment.
The results were closely studied by the researchers with inputs from the patients after the swelling had disappeared in a few weeks.
Results of the study
The team claimed to have witnessed astonishing results of the treatment in the patients, which improved their appearance for almost two years.
All the 25 patients were extremely happy with the lip graft and ranked it higher than all the other surgeries they had undertaken in the past.
Dr Agarwal said, "Our patients have been thrilled with the natural feel and appearance, without the need for an artificial filler or implant."
The surgery was much simpler and straightforward, with minimal complications, said the researchers.
The findings have been published in the Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery.
Lip Job: a growing rage
Fuller lips, considered a sexual symbol for women, are increasingly being added to the wish list of many.
Though lip jobs are not new in the medical history, dyes and colored clay was being used until 1980, when collagen injections were introduced in the market.
These injections brought about a revolution in the world of cosmetic surgery, following which many similar procedures were introduced, the Lip Graft technique being the latest.
The researchers advise the patients to choose their doctor with extra care and vigilance, finding out their certification and experience.
Patients should also share their complete medical history, any allergies and their current medications with the doctor to avoid any side effects, they suggested.
