Take heed of your smile, you are judged by it
A team of business advisors from the Go Group from Glasgow, UK, found that the speed with which ones smiles tells a lot about the person. The team also emphasized that slow grins are always considered genuine.
The Sun quoted, Lesley Meechan, Development director of the Go Group as saying, “Studies show people perceive a slower, natural smile which floods the entire face to be more genuine.”
Types of smiles to avoid
The team from the Glasgow-based company evaluated how different types of smiles resulted in different types of reactions from others.
The expert team aimed at analyzing how smiling can give clients an affirmative impression of the person.
What they found was a little surprising. A smile appearing too quickly and not extending to the eyes sent signals of one’s insincerity.
A slower, gentler beam is however accepted more warmly, stated the team.
They further identified three types of smiles that should be avoided by people.
First is 'The Enthusiast' (as practiced by Britney Spears), a huge smile, showing all of your teeth and wide eyes. They warn that such a smile can be considered as pompous.
Second is the 'The Big Freeze' (practiced by ex-PM Gordon Brown). This is a constant, practiced smile that lacks genuineness, stated experts.
And finally 'The Robot' (favoured by Dancing On Ice’s Jason Gardiner) which is a tiny, polished smile. Such a smile is known as the one not displaying any affection or warmth.
The slow smile
Smiling at the first meeting is a naturally occurring reaction in almost all situations.
However, a speedy smile does not work in favour of you all the time, stated the expert team.
Express quoted Meechan as saying, “An instant smile for anybody who comes your way does not make the other person feel special at all and can seem false.”
Bridget Hanna, an occupational psychologist at Caledonian University England, was cited by Scotsman as saying, “Smiling can help bind people so it’s a useful tool for business.”
“The frequency of your smile is important too, because smiling immediately, all of the time, comes across as over-pleasing and lowers your status,” added the psychologist.
