Son gives new lease of life to father by donating kidney
The "brat", in the words of the father, defied the entire family and expressed love for his father, not in words but in deeds.
“This is the best gift I could have received from my son. Amit was this happy-go-lucky extravagant young man and I never thought he would suggest doing anything like this. But he always said that love is not expressed by words, but by deeds,” says Laxmikant.
Family resisted initially
Laxmikant and his wife were against their young unmarried son taking such a risky step though.
"At first, it was difficult to convince my mother; she was very scared about my future. But I was insistent, and told her that the pain would last only a couple of days, and I would get immeasurable joy in return," Amit said.
Amit did not backtrack and went ahead with the donation, claiming that his father was above all.
“It is not a big deal. I feel absolutely fine and what has made a difference is that my father is going to be fine soon. It is the best feeling in the world,” said Amit who is back on his job as senior operations manager in a software company.
Chance to show gratitude
Laxmikant is employed with SAIL, Jharkhand. He developed a kidney problem seven years ago which deteriorated and progressively led to kidney failure.
Last year, when Laxmikant’s condition worsened, he was put on dialysis. A kidney transplant became imperative for his survival.
“My father’s blood group is O+ve and I realised that it would take at least a year and half to get my father a kidney. I could see his health slipping away. Then I decided to donate my kidney,” recalls Amit.
“I realised it was my duty to donate my kidney to him. I owe him my life, and this was a chance to show my gratitude to him," said the young, loving son.
The kidney transplant surgery was carried out on June 9 at the Institute of Kidney Disease and Research Centre (IKDRC).
Dr Pranjal Modi, a senior kidney specialist at IKDRC said, "This case was one of its kind. I have never before seen a son donating his kidney to his father, it has always been the other way round.”
Both Amit and Laxmikant are fine and the latter is said to be recovering fast.
