4-year-old donor saves two lives at Hyderabad hospital
The newborn who donated her eyes and heart valves has now become India’s youngest organ donor.
Despite the tragedy, her parents, Hymavathi, a school teacher, and Kishore Kumar, a revenue inspector, are happy that their child could give a new lease of life to others.
“We failed to save our first child. And that's why we thought of helping children whose lives are in danger because of failing organs.
“We can only hope that other parents too follow our example,” said the father, an employee of the revenue department in Mahabubnagar district.
Kept on ventilation for 2 days
A premature baby was delivered by Hymavathi at the Durgabai hospital in Hyderabad on 8th of July.
The child soon grew major complications within 2 days and was put on ventilator thereafter.
The hospital authorities informed the parents that the chances of survival of the infant were slim.
The child expired on July 12, leaving the family in a state of shock.
After her death, her parents were motivated by her uncle, also named Kishore Kumar, a reporter with the Telugu Sakshi channel, to donate her organs.
Organs donated to MOHAN foundation
On the family’s consent, Multi Organ Harvesting Aid Network (MOHAN) Foundation stepped in and had the baby shifted to Innova Hospital, Secunderabad, where her heart valves and eyes were retrieved under sterile conditions.
The organs were stored in order to be used later.
"Hers is a big achievement in a short span of life. Her heart valves will breathe life in two children while two others will gain sight to enjoy the beauties of the world," says MOHAN Foundation CEO K.Raghuram.
So far, 170 kidneys, 63 livers, 34 heart valves, eight hearts, 226 eyes and a pancreas has been retrieved by MOHAN foundation in Andhra Pradesh.
The organization aims at making organs easily available for those who cannot afford transplantation.
"A concerted effort from government, private hospitals and NGOs should be taken up to make transplantation accessible to general public," concludes Raghuram.
