Anti-impotence wafers work 30% faster than Viagra

An anti-impotence wafer, similar to breath freshener strip, could be the new tool to combat male impotence, a sexual dysfunction characterized by the inability to attain or sustain an erection firm enough to carry through a satisfactory sexual act.

"This could benefit a great many men," Dr David Edwards, a sexual medicine specialist from Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, claimed. "Anything that is able to melt on the tongue will have a faster response time than a pill."

Wafers more effective than Viagra
The wafer, mimicking the looks of one sold in sweet shops, melts immediately when placed on the tongue, giving a sexual surge 30 percent more quickly than the popular blue pill, Viagra.

The wafers are packed with same active ingredients as other anti-impotence pills, but in smaller molecules. And once the tiny soluble strip is placed on the tongue it disappears within seconds.

The initial trials of the wafer, manufactured by the Canadian firm IntelGenx, showed that the wafer works 30 percent more quickly than Viagra.

Unlike other drugs like Viagra and anti-impotence pills wherein most men take between 30 minutes to an hour to respond fully to the pill, the wafer releases similar amounts of medicine into the bloodstream in less than 30 minutes, nearly 30 percent more quickly than other drugs.

The reason why these wafers are more effective than the popular Viagra, researchers say, is the collection of tiny blood vessels present in the tissue lining in the mouth.

Present in huge numbers, these blood vessels provide a quick access route into the bloodstream, bestowing a timely and effective passion surge in most men.

The Canadian manufacturer is now planning bigger trials of the new treatment. If the findings of the subsequent trials second the initial findings, the wafer could be available within the next two to three years, researchers at IntelGenx averred.

IntelGenx is also planning to develop ‘wafers’ for pain relief, high blood pressure and depression, all being based on the same line of action, ‘fast acting’.

"A similar type of wafer is already used in the treatment of migraine, where it's important to tackle pain quickly," Edwards added.
