Try sugary delights to calm your anger--study

Are you among those who find it hard to maintain a calm composure at times? Chances are sugar levels in your bloodstream have declined, which in turn is making you more aggressive than usual.

In this situation, you need a sweet drink to calm your nerves. At least that’s what the researchers of the Ohio State University are suggesting in their recently released study.

As per the study researchers, people who have a low blood-sugar count or are unable to metabolize sugar in their bodies, are more likely to loose their tempers even at the slightest provocation.

While commenting on the new study findings, study co-author Brad Bushman, who’s a professor of communication and psychology at Ohio State University, explained in a press release, “Avoiding aggressive impulses takes self control, and self control takes a lot of energy. Glucose provides that energy in the brain.”

Bushman added that their research showed that “drinking sweetened lemonade helped provide the short-term energy needed to avoid lashing out at others.”

Study findings
To come to this conclusion, Bushman along with his colleagues from the same University analyzed changes in the behavior of 62 students, after giving half of them lemonade sweetened with sugar while the other half’s drink was sweetened with a sugar substitute.

Afterward they used a standard test to measure changes in the aggressive impulses of all the volunteers.

Researchers after thoroughly analyzing the data collected came to the conclusion that those who drank lemonade sweetened with sugar showed less sign of aggression as compared to those volunteers whose drink was sweetened with a sugar substitute.

Another startling fact researchers discovered along with aforementioned findings was that people who encountered trouble digesting sugar or the natural glucose present in their body were more aggressive and unforgiving by nature.

Diabetics more aggressive
As per this study, diabetics are more at risk of losing their calm as their bodies have developed resistance to both outside and inside glucose/sugar.

“Diabetes may not only harm you - it is bad for society. The healthy metabolism of glucose may contribute to a more peaceful society by providing people with a higher level of energy for self-control,” concluded Bushman.

It seems like diabetes not just affects one’s health but also has the potential to play spoilsport with his/her temperament.

The study findings were published recently in the online edition of the journal 'Aggressive Behavior.'
