Texas newborn weighs 16 pounds, about the size of six-month-old

Like any other woman, a Texas woman gave birth to a baby boy on Friday. But what made her and the baby so special was the size of the newborn. The baby boy born weighing 16lbs 1oz - just over a stone!

On Friday morning, Janet Johnson gave birth to her ‘big’ baby boy, named JaMichael Brown, by Cesarean section in Longview, Texas. She had already been told by her doctors that her soon-to-arrive son would be big.

Newborn is the size of six-months-old
Janet and her husband, Michael Brown, went into Good Shepherd Hospital in Longview for a scheduled Cesarean section, knowing that they would soon be welcoming a pretty big baby.

But when her doctor pulled the baby out, it was a different story. The baby emerged with a head full of hair and a size on par with some smallish toddlers.

Jamichael weighed in at 16-pounds, 24-inches long with a 17-inch chest; those are measurements of the average three to six-month-old.

“We’re just amazed,” Janet told the Longview News-Journal. “I can’t believe he’s that big. A lot of the baby clothes we bought for him will have to be returned. They’re already too small for him to wear."

Big news for Texas
His weight was some four pounds more than doctors expected. Doctors had previously estimated the baby to be around 12 pounds.

With whopping weight, JaMichael has become the biggest baby born at Good Shepherd Hospital in Longview, Texas, and probably the largest in the state too.

An examination of state records is underway to see if he could be the state's biggest baby.

JaMichael is Janet's fourth child, and first boy, with Michael Brown. The toddler has three older sisters, who are 18, 16, and ten.

“That's it, no more now,” the Daily Mail quoted Janet as saying.

Baby in ICU
The fourth time mom had suffered gestational diabetes during the pregnancy and, as a result, her newborn son is currently in intensive care in order to regulate his blood sugar.

“I’m happy,” she said. “We’ll be here for a few more days, and then I’m looking forward to bringing JaMichael home and just loving on him.”

Meanwhile, hospital did not have diapers big enough to fit JaMichael, and the workers had to go outside the facility to find diapers that would actually fit the baby.
