Egg white to combat sleepiness after lunch

A recent study in U.S. was done to compare the activity level after the intake of high sugar containing foods and egg white. The main aim behind the study was to understand disorders linked to obesity and sleep.

“To combat obesity and insomnia in today’s society, we need more information on how diet affects sleep and appetite cells”, said Dr. Denis Burdakov, Principal Investigator and Head of Department of Pharmacology at the University of Cambridge

In their study, they found that Orexin cells play a key role in body’s energy expenditure and wakefulness.

Research work
Orexin cells secrete Orexin or hypocretin, a natural stimulant in human brain cells. Intake of jams, toast or carbohydrate rich food, blocks the release of Orexin, thereby bringing fatigue and feeling of restlessness in the body.

At the end of the research, scientists found that the stimulation of neurons linked to Orexin cells is maximum by amino acids present in egg white as compared to any other diet. These amino acids prevent glucose from interacting with Orexin cells.

Carbohydrate rich food has the tendency to block the neuronal transmission between adjacent Orexin cells thereby bringing a feeling of sleepiness after meals.

“For now, research suggests that if you have a choice between jam on toast, or egg whites on toast, go for the latter! Even though the two may contain the same number of calories, having a bit of protein will tell the body to burn more calories out of those consumed”, said Denis Burdakov.
