Chip-sandwiched soap case: 2 officials arrested, later released

An unusual case came into light in Poonthura, Thiruvananthapuram, when the local residents noticed an electronic chip inside the lifebuoy soaps they used.

After getting the complaints from residents’, local police arrested two officials of the agency that distributed soaps.

Cops were informed that a bathing soap-related survey was undertaken by NGO, Socio Economic Unit Foundation (SEUF) in Vellayambalam on the behalf of Unilever Research Medicine (UK) and Intertek CRS limited.

The aim of the study was to know the health and hygiene of people residing in coastal regions. The survey was led by Peter Hall.

To get to the results, SEUF workers distributed lifebuoy soaps among the people of Beemapally and Valiyathura. They asked the people to use it and return the same after few days. Along with the soap, SEUF workers gave Rs.400 to the participants.

Brochure mentions use of chip
Two arrested officials were soon released by the police after they provided a brochure that explained the whole study.

Along with the soaps, these brochures were also distributed among the residents participating in the study.

Police office investigating the study said, “We found that the brochure has the information about the chip and only those who agreed to the use of such soaps were enrolled for the survey. Moreover, the agency which did the survey is an authorized one.”
