HIV Boy Shooed Away From School in Tamil Nadu

In an era where everyone is coming forward and joining hands to fight against AIDS, a shameful act was witnessed in a primary school in Keela Sandhaipettai in Madurai, Tamil Nadu.

A 13 year old student was barred from coming to school after the authorities came to know that boy is having AIDS.

According to the test reports, boy was diagnosed of AIDS last year but due to normal CD4 count he wasn’t put on ART (Anti Retroviral Therapy) treatment.

Complaining about the misbehavior of school staff, boy said, “The teacher started discriminating me soon after going through a notebook which disclosed details about my treatment.”

Protecting themselves from false allegations, school authorities said, “The boy was very sick so they did not ask him to come.”

Mother infected with HIV
Boy might have got the disease from his mother, Valli (42), who is herself on medication after she was diagnosed with AIDS. Upon asking, she said that she was completely unaware how she got AIDS.

Speaking of her disease, Valli said, “I fell sick about two years ago and blood reports revealed that I was tested positive for the deadly virus. I have been on medication ever since.”

The whole incident came into notice after the mother of boy filed a complaint against the school authorities to B V Babu, president of Tamil Nadu States AIDS control society center.
