33-year-old has 5 kidneys post renal surgeries

Jalandhar, May 21: Multiple kidney transplants have left 33-years-old Jaswant with five kidneys. Doctors say he is the fourth such patient in the country to have undergone three successful renal transplants. The first three were conducted at Hyderabad, Lucknow and Delhi.

Organ donation from within the family
Jaswant, a photographer by profession, underwent his first renal surgery in 2004. His elder sister became the first donor. But his body rejected the kidney because he could not continue post-operation medication due to financial constraints.

For the second surgery, his younger sister donated her kidney but 14 months after the operation his body rejected the organ, and he was once again on dialysis.

His mother, Amar Kaur, 55, gave Jaswant her kidney for the third transplant. It is interesting to note that for all his surgeries he was able to get a
donor from within the family.

The family is hardly able to make both the ends meet. Father ekes out a living by selling milk and earnings of his driver brother are also not enough.

Financial aid from the medics
Help came from the medics- Rajesh Agrawal, transplant surgeon of the National Kidney Hospital and Surgeons Suresh Aggarawal and Sanjay Mittal, who operated on him for free and have made arrangements for some of his medications.

They mentioned that it is not necessary to remove the old kidney before a transplant. This is what has led Jawant to carry five kidneys.

The doctors are now planning to provide scientific data of Jaswant`s case to medical journals.
