8 kg tumor removed successfully
Dr. Amit Gandhi, consultant cancer surgeon at Bombay Hospital, said, “The tumor was big in size and had occupied the whole of the abdomen. She was fit for operation two months back and could have developed further complications if she wasn’t operated upon.”
Satyavati’s story
Satyavati was diagnosed with the tumor last year but after her husband’s death, she fell into depression and did not bother to get herself operated as recommended then by the doctors at the Nair Hospital (Mumbai).
Things got worse two months ago, when the family went for a holiday to Sawantwadi where Satyavati developed severe bloating in her abdomen. She could hardly breathe.
Her family took her to KEM hospital but she could not be operated upon due to complications in her case. From here, she was referred to Tata Memorial Hospital (TMH) where she could not be given treatment due to unavailability of a bed.
On a family friend`s recommendation, they approached Dr. Gandhi at Bombay Hospital.
The surgery was a success. There was no spillage and all organs were intact. Her doctors believe that the prognosis is good, and she now requires routine radiation therapy.
Peculiar case of Satyavati
According to doctors at Bombay hospital, she suffered from a rare form of cancer-leiomysarcoma. "Out of a lakh cancer patients, only one suffers from sarcoma,'' Dr. Gandhi said.
This type of cancer afflicts soft muscles, usually abdomen. This form of sarcoma, a form of cancer, generally arises from the vein but in case of Satyavati it arose from an artery- mesenteric artery.
However, a senior doctor at THM disagreed on the surgery being a rare one and said that such surgeries are performed routinely at their hospital.
