It sure is a strange world out there, with the strangest of happenings making it to the news pages every day. But no one would have expected something so strange when a 9 year old girl was being taken to the hospital, on complaints of stomach ache.
The doctors found the girl in severe pain and saw the right side of her stomach swollen. But none of them had expected the swelling to be an embryonic twin that the child was carrying inside of her.
The doctors at Larissa General Hospital, in central Greece who examined the girl on complaints of a severe stomach ache, operated her to surgically remove the growth only to discover later that it was an embryonic twin she was carrying.
The embryo was six centimeters long which makes it more than two inches in length. According to Andreas Markau, the head of the pediatrics department of the hospital, the embryo had a proper head, hair and eyes, but there was no brain or umbilical corddefine.
"They could see on the right side that her belly was swollen, but they couldn't suspect that this tumor would hide an embryo," hospital director Iakovos Brouskelis said.
Such cases occur as rarely as one in a five lakhs cases, where one embryo grows inside the other in the mother’s womb. The girl is fine and has fully recovered, however her parents did not want their identity disclosed.
