The study, which was conducted by National Cancerdefine Institute of France (INCa), also revealed that regular drinkers have a higher probability of being affected by other types of cancers.
Dominique Maraninchi, INCa’s President, was quoted as saying, “Small daily doses of alcohol are the most harmful. There is no amount, however small, which is good for you.”
Earlier studies had indicated that antioxidants
define present in red wine can help cut down the risk of cancer. But the latest study findings contradict the previous researches.
The INCa study has cautioned people against the consumption of alcohol and has said that it is associated with an increase in the probability of cancers of mouth, larynx
define, esophagus, colon
define-rectumdefine and breast.
The INCa study elaborated saying, “The cause is above all the transformation of ethanol in alcohol to acetaldehyde, which damages DNA in healthy cells.”
It further added that the probability of this happening is the most when alcohol is consumed on a regular basis, no matter how small the quantity is.
Official statistics reveal that alcohol claims around six percent i.e., 9000 lives of all cancer deaths in the United Kingdom every year. These include 5000 cases of mouth and esophagus cancer. The number of breast cancer cases stand at 2000.
“We know that drinking just small amounts of alcohol, in the form of beer, wine or spirits, increases the risk of several different types of cancer. So the more you cut down on alcohol, the more you can reduce your cancer risk,” said Dr. Jodie Moffat of the charity Cancer Research United Kingdom.
Judy O’ Sullivan of the British Heart Foundation, further elaborated that drinking about one to two units of alcohol daily might help in reducing the risk of coronary heart disease. But there are much healthier options to protect our heart.
Moreover, there is no concrete proof, which establishes any specific health benefits of red wine over other types of alcoholic drinks.
With the present study, it has been established that alcohol is now the second most avoidable reason for death, next only to tobacco.
In addition, it has also been found that eating red meat in excess of 500 grams (1.2 lbs) can increase the risk of colonic cancer. Also, high salt intake can raise the risk of stomach cancer.
The report added, “Cancer is dependent on many factors, and there is no miracle diet that remove the risks. But eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, avoiding alcohol and tobacco, and doing regular physical exercise has been proven to reduce the risks dramatically.”
