AIIMS To Offer Tips On A Happy Married Life

The All India Institute Of Medical Science, is soon going to begin a crash course in sex education, with the name – Pre marriage course for happy married life. The course aims at educating those young couples to be, who enter married life with incomplete or no knowledge at all, about what lies ahead.

Surprisingly, there are many of them around.

Infact, doctors at AIIMS put forth a shocking fact, that many young men and women continue to remain in the dark about sex, even after marriage, carrying with them several misnomers and rumors, adding to the confusion.

Where on one end condom sales are rising in India, the high levels of sex related ignorance is another fact which can not be overlooked.

Stemming from this very reality was the idea to begin the crash course, starting July 29, priced at Rs. 500 per person. The course which would have lectures as well as films on the facts of human body, explaining sex, sexual anatomy, ways of contraception, sexually transmitted diseases, genetic disorders and other marriage related issues, is the first of its kind to be taken up in a government hospital.

The course aims at preparing the youth for an emotionally, physically and socially better married life. The brain child of the Health Promotion and Health Communication Unit at AIIMS, the course will have separate classes for men and women, above 18 years of age and planning to get married. However, some common lectures are also scheduled.
“We found many marriages were falling apart because of an unhappy sex life. For example, a 20-something couple came to us on the verge of divorce, seeking help for their sex life. It turned out they did not know how to use their bodies correctly,” says Dr Bir Singh, professor of community medicine, who heads the sex and marriage-counseling clinic at AIIMS and is the course convener.

Such attempts at educating the youth are a must in countries like India, which are undergoing a big socio-cultural change. The youth of today are bound to benefit from them, instead of groping in the dark and making irreparable mistakes.
