In the season of giving, the American Red Cross, as a special thanks to donors for saving lives, has declared a reward. Three participants would be entitled to two round-trip airline tickets each on Delta Air Lines.
Blood is a precious resource and needs to be replenished constantly. In Red Cross’s promotional campaign ‘Live Life, Give Life’ April Phillips, spokeswoman for the Southern Blood Services, declared that through March 31st each person involved in the blood drive would be entitled to enter the draw for a chance to win a trip.
According to the Red Cross, the Southern blood services region has its headquarters in Douglasville. This region includes more than 120 hospitals in Georgia and also serves hospitals in Alabama, Mississippi, The Carolinas, Florida and Puerto Rico. It collects and distributes more than 994,062 units of blood and 116,220 units of platelets each year. Approximately half of the blood collected in the state comes from metro Atlanta.
Philips stated “Because we’re an import region, we have to bring in 50,000 to 60,000 units of blood from other regions each year just to meet our local needs. And every day of the year, somebody needs blood, so the need for it never stops.”
In winters, it becomes difficult to maintain a stable supply as donors get busy with the festivities. Blood donations dwindle leaving the supply at the risk of reaching critically low levels. Maintaining the supply is an issue for everyone, as every two seconds some one in U.S. needs blood.
A single blood donation may be separated into three components - platelets, plasma
define and red cells. They are used for the accident victims, cancer
define patients and burn victims respectively.
The American Red Cross urges everyone to make donating blood a priority. Rodney Wilson, a spokesman said, ‘The holiday season is a challenge for the Red Cross each year. We need everyone to come and embrace the spirit of the season and give to those less fortunate through the gift of blood donation.”
