Alternate Routes To Fitness

No doubt, each one of use is convinced that an active lifestyle really can yield enormous benefits. But one still wonders how, with hectic schedules, lost time traveling to and from work and other pressures most of us face, anyone can find the time to make exercise a high priority.

It’s not the lack of trying. Just about all of us have, at one time or another started to exercise diligently with every intension of continuing for life. But unfortunately, 72 percent of the people who begin a fitness program abandon it within six months. It’s only the committed few who exercise for a lifetime.

So, for keeping motivation levels high and the fitness plan interesting;

Think activity, not exercise:

You don’t have to spend a fortune on a gym membership, fancy equipment, or a workout wardrobe to be fit. Plenty of recreational activities qualify as exercise, with no requirement that you go anywhere near a gym. Any physical activity can do you good.

Mix it up:

Varying your activities will keep you far more stimulated than spending 20 minutes every other day on the same stationary bike.

Get some company:

Instead of going solo, join up with a friend or family member and you will encourage and support each other.

Combine fitness with pleasure:

With all the electronic devices available now-a-days, it’s easy to combine a workout with entertainment. Borrow an audio from the library and listen to it on your evening walk. Or, tape your favorite television show and watch while stretching. Caution: where distractions work best for aerobic activities, Strength-training exercises, especially weight-lifting, requires your full attention.

Challenge yourself:

There are many events, such as walking, cycling, swimming, running, available for all ages and fitness levels. Setting achievable goals regularly will keep you motivated to stay active and healthy.
