United Kingdom, October 18: Ever wondered how a frog’s leg pizza would taste? Yes, now one can sample the ‘Hopper Pizza’- an innovation by the restaurant chain, Eco, in Britain.
The pizza, priced at 17.95 pounds, has a topping of six to eight frog legs. It has got the good old tomato and mozzarella base along with a garnishing of capers, fresh herbs and a scoop of anchovy sorbet.
But the animal rights campaigners have strongly protested against the latest so-called 'delicacy'. “Whatever reassurances might be offered by those involved, frogs are treated in a sickening and barbaric manner so that this restaurant can serve up a so-called delicacy of frog’s legs pizza,” a spokeswoman for Animal Aid was quoted as saying.
It has been learnt that the legs of the frogs are amputated while they are still alive.
Animal Aid has urged people to boycott the restaurant serving this pizza. Their spokeswoman added, “I cannot believe people are so desperate to entertain their palates that they want to be part of this vicious and callous trade.”
Two other Eco restaurants in London are also serving the questionable Hopper pizza.
However, the brain behind the new recipe has defended his creation. According to Chef Sami Wasif, he came up with this idea during a trip to Paris and says that the pizza is ‘refined’.
Wasif said that he has been making pizzas for the past 20 years in London. He added that the people of London are always looking for something novel as far as food is concerned.
About how to eat the pizza, Sami Wasif said, “You need a finger bowl and must take time over the legs - not shovel the whole pizza into your mouth.”
Frog’s legs are already well-known delicacies in France and China. They are also savored in the Caribbean, Greece and parts of the U.S.. Mostly, the frog used in dishes is called the ‘edible frog’.
