Botox Can Be a Competent Painkiller

Botox Can Be a Competent Painkiller

Botulinum toxin A or Botox as it is popularly tagged in the beauty world, has already earned quite a reputation for erasing wrinkles and making the facial skin appear fresh and youthful. Now a review article published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology says that there is more to botox than just a miracle wrinkle eraser.

Botox or BTXA as it is called in medical parlance can also treat hyperhidrosis, a condition where there is excessive sweating. BTXA has also found some use in reducing pain as well as itching, making it a good candidate for use as an anti-allergic drug. Uwe Wollina, the author of the review article also notes that BTXA can treat hand eczema effectively. In Hailey-Hailey disease, the drug is used to block secretions of sweat, saliva and mucus. Dr Wollina is the Director of the Department of Dermatology at the Hospital Dresden-Freidrichstadt in Dresden, Germany.

The author concludes by saying, "Botulinum toxin A has important applications in proctology where it has become the most powerful non-surgical therapy for anal fissure. The substance in the hands of the experienced doctor is safe, provides effective treatment of several complaints, and is capable of reducing the need for surgery in many cases."
