Doctors in charge of the program at Wythenshawe Hospital say that the digital mobile unit, costing around £300,000, will generate vivid images of suspected cells.
It is worth mentioning here that whether or not at risk of developing the disease, women in the age group of 47 to 50 are called for breast cancerdefine screening after every three years.
Studies advocate that digital screening can be really useful in improving cancer detection by as much as 15 percent.
Superintendent radiographer at the Nightingale Centre of Wythenshawe Hospital, Barbara Eckersley, was quoted as saying, “Screening usually involves an X-ray of each breast - a mammogram
define - which can detect small changes in breast tissue which may indicate cancers which are too small to be felt by the woman herself or by a doctor. The digital service will allow us to enhance or pinpoint areas of the breast which may need further investigation.”
Research indicates that around 6000 women from Greater Manchester have been saved from death, thanks to timely detection of breast cancer under the NHS screening program.
To facilitate radiologists in comparing new scans with the older ones and identify any variations, the digital scans are saved on computer.
Moreover, the images can be magnified, zoomed in or be saved and retrieved electronically. Besides simplifying long-distance consultations, this also helps radiologists to understand the images better.
The charity Breakthrough Breast Cancer is making all efforts to ensure fast implementation of digital mammography to screen breast cancers.
A spokeswoman of the charity remarked, “Digital mammography is better at cancer detection in denser breasts. This is particularly important as the NHS programme starts to screen more women under 50, who have a family history of breast cancer.”
