'Heartburn' refers to the burning sensation in the chest. It is a symptom of another digestive disorder, and not a disorder by itself. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is one of the most common symptom of heartburn.
Acid reflux is a medical condition, with heartburn as a possible symptom of that condition. Though many people have different heartburn triggers, but most people have similar heartburn symptoms, which could range from an acidic taste in the mouth and burping, to abdominal and chest pains.
Few simple steps to help avoid heartburn:
* Avoid food with a high acid content, like tomatoes.
* Cut down on nicotine (any tobacco product) and alcohol.
* Being obese increases the chances of heartburn.
* Stop eating fried or fatty foods.
* Avoid eating for at least 2-3 hours before hitting bed.
* Use pillows to elevate your head during sleep.
* Avoid drinks with caffeine (coffee, tea, colas, chocolate).
* Garlics and onions should be avoided. Too much of garlic might give you heartburn.
