Eye Care- 10 Steps Away

Who could tell the real worth of eyes than a blind man who has never seen the face of their loved ones or the beautiful colors of life but have lived with only one color and that is BLACK.

We must thank all mighty for blessing us with eyes and it is our duty to take care of it so as to have healthy eyes throughout life. We have heard many times “Eyes Talk” and I tell you it is simply true, its not only mouth which do the talking but sometimes eyes in their own silent language let us know what exactly a person is thinking. So, eyes are too important for us.

Though eyes are naturally cleaned by the tears but still one must maintain proper eye hygiene so that they remain healthy and strong. Few suggestion to maintain a healthy eyes:

1. Wear sunglasses while going out

The Ultraviolet light from the sun are harmful for eyes and lead to eye diseases such as cataract and macular degeneration. So, it’s essential to protect eyes from sunlight by wearing good sunglasses even in winters.

2. Carry Umbrella

If possible carry umbrella along with you so that it could protect you from strong sunlight.

3. Wear hats

Wearing hats will also help in protecting from sun’s ultraviolet rays.

4. Before touching your eyes you must wash hands or it could lead to eye infection.

5. Contact Lens Wearer should be extra careful

Proper care must be taken if you wear contact lens. Always wash hands before and after putting on lens. The lens must be cleaned with only recommended solution by doctor. The case must be properly stored. If going out do carry contact lens carry case with saline solution in it. Wear glasses after you take off lens at night.

Disposable lens should be discarded timely and should not be reused again.

If you have to apply eye make up than wear your lens and use water proof mascara and liner and should take off make up as soon as you are back home.

Take out the lens if your eyes are hurting or turning red and if problem still persists do visit your doctor.

6. Exercise your eyes

Exercise your eyes especially those people who spend almost most of their waking hours doing something or another. Sitting in front of computer for long duration can actually harm eyes. So take short breaks after every hour or two hour.

Eye exercise could improve vision, eye hand coordination, eye body coordination etc.

7. Look after your diet

A well balanced diet comprising of green leafy vegetables and fresh fruits can do a lot good for your eyes. Eat carrots and other orange colored fruits. Antioxidantsdefine, along with water and fatty acids such as omega 3 and omega 6 are very much important to maintain healthy eyesight. The antioxidants could slow down the progression of age related eye problems such as cataracts and macular degeneration.

8. Go for regular eye check ups

Get your eyes check up annually.

9. Stop Smoking

Smoking is the one of the leading cause of age-related macular degeneration (AMRD) which is a leading cause of blindness, according to latest studies.

Even passive smoking can cause damage to the eyes due to its toxic nature. Another serious eye disease caused due to smoking is glaucoma.

10. Wear proper glasses while playing, working etc.

Most of the people who are engaged in one game or another such as basketball, baseball, tennis, wrestling, soccer etc are vulnerable to sports related injuries so they must wear sunglasses, sportswear, helmets with eye shields etc to protect their eyes.

Those working in factories such as wielding industry, chemical industry etc should wear proper protective eye shields.
