FDA Rules Out Human Placenta From Dietary Supplements

The cat is finally out of the box, with FDA declaring once and for all, the presence of human placentadefine or aristolochic acid and ephedra in any and all dietary supplements as a serious health hazard to consumers.

The FDA had since long been regarding the presence of these contents in the dietary supplements as injurious to health and had prohibited the sale of supplements containing ephedrine alkaloids in 2004, as they are suspected to have dangerous effects on the heart.

However, now recent studies have proved that even human placentadefine which is used in many dietary supplements may transmit disease. Not only that, Aristolochic acid is proved to be a potent carcinogendefine, resulting in kidney failure or damage to the extent of causing kidney cancerdefine too. Ephedrine alkaloids, on the other hand may cause serious damage to the heart, like raising blood pressure and stressing the circulatory system, finally resulting in increased chances of a heart stroke.

This has resulted in the recall of 12 dietary supplements from the market, by Herbal Science International, Inc., which works in close association with FDA. The company is recalling-Seng Jong Tzu Tong Tan, a product that contains human placenta, as the FDA has banned the lawful sale of products containing human placenta in the United States.

All the twelve products have been voluntarily recalled. Sold in white bottles of 100 capsules each these products were sold nationwide in stores, by acupuncturists and on the net. The company promises to refund the customers their money on bottles recently purchased when returned to the store.
