Frequent Sex Works Best Against Erectile Dysfunction: Study

Following the 'use it or lose it' principle, aging men who don’t indulge in frequent sexual activities have higher risk of developing erectile dysfunction, as compared to men who have sex at least once a week, a Finnish study suggests.

Sexual intercourse less than once per week, doubled the risk of developing erectile dysfunction, compared with men reporting, having sexual intercourse once a week according to the study.

Making results more sensual, "More sex means even less ED risk," added the team of researchers lead by Juha Koskimaki of Tampere University Hospital, Department of Urology, Tampere, Finland.

As the weekly sex rate crossed ‘three times a week’, indulging men were able to cut their erectile dysfunction risk to almost one-fourth, compared to men who have less-than-weekly sex, researchers found.

For the study, researchers analyzed the questionnaires filled by 989 Finnish men aged between 55 and 75 years, not having all erectile dysfunction at the beginning of the study.

Upon a five year follow-up, 79 cases of erectile dysfunction per 1,000 men were reported among men who had sexual intercourse less than once a week. The number dropped to 32 cases per 1,000 among men reported having sexual intercourse once a week.

Interestingly, the numbers took a further plunge and dropped to mere 16 per 1,000 among men who indulged in sexual activities over thrice a week, the study published in the July issue of ‘The American Journal of Medicine’ reports.

Also associated were the frequency of morning erections and the risk of developing erectile dysfunction, researchers noted. Among men who experienced less than 1 morning erection a week, the risk of developing erectile dysfunction was found to be 2.5 times higher than men who experienced 2-3 morning erections per week, researchers found.

Erectile Dysfunction:
