Gene find may lead to new therapies for breast cancer

Opening ways to new therapies for the women suffering from breast cancerdefine, scientists specializing in cancer studies have recently discovered a gene may hold the key to a treatment for up to 10% of all breast cancers. The development of this gene could lead to the treatment of breast cancer with more sophisticated methods, sparing the women of chemotherapy and its devastating side-effects.

Scientists at the Institute of Cancerdefine Research in the UK discovered an overactive gene, FGFR1, which has been found to be responsible for one out of every ten breast cancers. It includes many lobular cancers, which are increasing at the fastest pace and are the hardest to treat. Currently, lobular tumors are treated with hormone-blocking drugs but the cancer returns in about 30 per cent of women.

Apparently half the cancers carried extra copies of the gene FGFR1, which is responsible for providing the blueprint for a cancer-fueling protein. The findings suggest that blocking FGFR1 activity may slow, stop or reverse tumor growth.

The scientists also removed the FGFR1 gene from cells that mimicked the genetic features of a certain group of breast cancers, and showed the cells were addicted to the FGFR1 and so relied on the gene to be present for the tumor to grow.

Jorge Reis-Filho, of the molecular pathology laboratory at the Breakthrough Breast Cancer Research Centre at the institute, said, “The identification of FGFR1 in this sub-group of breast cancers is a very promising finding and although we are a few years away from clinical trials we are moving closer towards our vision of a future free from the fear of breast cancer.”

Every year some 44,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancers and 10-15% of those have lobular cancers.

The research echoes the work that led to the development of the breast cancer drug Herceptin, which can be prescribed for women whose cancer is HER2 positive - around 20% of those diagnosed.

She soon got back to her job, and subsequent tests confirmed that her heart was functioning normally once again.
