Giving up sugar can make you look ten years younger

London -- It is a known fact that sweet, which is high in calories, can lead to a good increase in weight, but for the first time a book by dermatologist Dr Fredric Brandt, has revealed that sweet treats can cause wrinkles.

According to Brandt, who discusses the effect of sweet on skin in his book 10 Minutes/10 Years: Your Definitive Guide To A Beautiful And Youthful Appearance, removing sweet from diet can make a person look ten years younger.

"In a nutshell, sugar hastens the degradation of elastin and collagen, both key skin proteins. In other words, it actively ages you,” the Daily Mail quoted Dr Brandt, as saying.

The sugar leads to glycation process that makes sugar molecules bind to your protein fibres, which are flexible collagen and elastin fibres that form the base for a person’s skin

"Imagine that your collagen is your skin’s mattress and the elastin fibres are the coils holding it together. The sugar attacks these fibres, making them less elastic and more brittle so they break. The result is that your once-youthful skin starts to sag and look old,” he added.

The glycation process makes these fibres to change; causing harmful new molecules called Advanced Glycation End products (AGEs), which damage collagen and elastin.

A healthy skin will get back to its original position after a smile, but
if collagen and elastic has been made delicate by glycation, wrinkles appear.

“Cooking food this way creates AGEs which, once consumed, bind to the collagen and elastin fibres. AGEs form when any food that’s made up of sugar, protein and/or fat is cooked to a high heat," said Dr Brandt.

"The higher the temperature and the longer the cooking, the more AGEs form. All food that you brown, whether you’re roasting a chicken, baking a potato or barbecuing a steak, is high in AGEs,” he added.

Brandt added that the conventional notion that AGEs can be easily digested, is wrong.

"Conventional wisdom used to hold that when you ate something containing AGEs, they would simply pass through the digestive tract. But that turned out to be wishful thinking. The cake baking in the oven may have a gorgeous golden crust, but inside each delicious crumb is a time bomb of ageing in the form of AGEs,” he said. (ANI)

An earlier study carried out by researchers at the Harvard School Of Public Health had reveled a strong correlation between the consumption of refined carbohydrates, especially refined white sugar and increased risk of breast cancerdefine. This new research was apparently also a major breakthrough for the scientists, who are now beginning to suspect that there are in fact direct links between diet and cancer. The nutritionists and naturopathic physicians have long been urging people to avoid consumption of refined carbohydrates, especially refined white sugar. White sugar is not only known to cause nutrition deficiencies and suppression of immune systemdefine and brain function, it also promotes both diabetes and obesity. Now we can officially add ageing and cancer to that list.

Refined carbohydrates, including sugar, are undeniably linked to diabetes. Researchers around the world have come to the conclusion that the consumption of refined sugar is detrimental to the health of people without diabetes, and disastrous for those with diabetes. Furthermore, excess sugar in the blood can cause the onset of type 2 diabetes. According to NANCY APPLETON, Ph.D., author of the book titled LICK THE SUGAR HABIT, there are 78 metabolic consequences of consuming high sugar. A sports nutritionist, BILL MISNER says that sugar is devoid of vitamins, minerals and fiber. Furthermore, as a result of its deteriorating effects on the endocrine system, researchers and health experts agree that excess sugar consumption is one of the major causes of the degenerative disease like diabetes. Dr. JOHN YUDKIN, a leading authority on dietary sugars, says that the detrimental effects of excess sugar in the diet go far beyond rotting teeth and obesity. For example, Yudkin says, Sugar causes irregularities in the insulindefine response ; sugar also causes diabetes-like damage to the kidneys; it also contributes to degeneration of the retina ; it raises blood fat levels and it increases the stickiness of the blood platelets as well, a common precursor of heart trouble. The author of the book titled ALTERNATIVE CURES, Bill Gottlieb, writes, Excess sugar in the blood damages the arteries and veins and can lead to fatal heart disease and stroke. The death rate for middle-aged people with type 2 diabetes is twice that of middle-aged people who do not have it. Gottlieb adds, The glut of sugar can also cause kidney disease eye problems, and severe nerve damage to the lower limbs and other parts of the body. The fact is, refined white sugar is one of the most unhealthy food ingredients one can put into his / her body. Of course human body does require an optimum level of sugar in the body to survive and remain active, but this much sugar is invariably and easily obtained by the everyday normal diet. Putting any additional quantity of sugar into the body is fraught with risk and danger. The excess sugar causes depletion of nutrients such as vitamins and minerals that our body needs to function properly, and it also causes radical swing in blood sugar that affects insulin resistance as well as mood and brain function. Excess sugar has even been linked to the violent behaviour and various behavioural disorders, especially in young males.
The Money Times news item should now also open the eyes of the Ministry of Health, Drug Controller General of India, and AYUSH authorities, who are blindly permitting CHYAVANPRASH-, SONA CHANDI CHYAVANPRASH-, AND SONA CHANDI AMRITPRASH- manufacturing companies to sell their idiotic products which contain up to 70 % of sugar.
