It seems hormonesdefine really have a connection with our urges, be it a shopping spree or be it a mouthwatering treat to calm down an appetite; hormones sure do play havoc with our sense of control.
A recent study proves that what makes people eat more than required or indulge in out of turn binging is not actually a weak will, but the culprit here is the hormone called Ghrelin. This hormone plays a vital role in improving perception and memory related to food and makes it more appealing to the eye.
Although, a lot of facts were already known to the scientists regarding this hormone, secreted in the gut and the rise and fall in its levels in the stomach just before and after meals, a study was done on 20 volunteers to find out more about it.
Out of the 20 participants, 12 were given Ghrelin injections and others were not, however they were told that they too have received the injections. All 20 were then shown pictures of food and scenery randomly. It was noticed that people with the dose of Ghrelin responded more strongly to pictures of food. The drug also enhanced their memories and they remembered the food pictures well.
The findings of the study brought out the following deductions-
• Starving people are ready to eat the otherwise non appetizing food also, because of this hormone, which makes one respond to food.
• If one is well fed and not hungry at all, Ghrelin stimulations could contribute to obesity.
• Ghrelin has effect on brain and moods too. Thus, any medicine that aims to fight obesity by curbing Ghrelin secretions would invariably also result in a depressed mood.
So, next when you’re hungry avoid walking into a food store, else you might end up walking out with hands and stomach full of food which otherwise might ruin up your whole diet plan, thanks to Ghrelin!

The importance of salt in our lives cannot be overstated. Salt is required to perform some of the vital body functions. It is essential for regulating blood, body fluids and helps maintain nerve signals. Though salt deficiency leads to muscular weakness, cramps and exhaustion, extra sodium intake disrupts the body’s fluid balance leading to hypertension and heart strokes.
