Cervical spondylosisdefine is a disorder of the neck spine, where the vertebrae (bones in the neck) and the discs (cushions between the vertebrae) start degenerating. The condition is also known as cervical osteoarthritis.
The degeneration in the bones and the discs occur as a result of wear and tear as one ages. The discs lose their elasticity and become drier and this causes them to become more brittle.
Along with the degeneration of discs, bony out growths also form on the vertebrae which are called osteophytes.
Although, the disorder can start early, it usually appears around the age of 40. Cervical spondylosisdefine affects both sexes equally, but men tend to develop it at an earlier age than women.
All these degenerative changes in the cervical spine cause compression and pressure on the spinal nerves that come out of the spinal cord, producing symptoms of cervical spondylosis.
The symptoms of cervical spondylosis are:
• Progressive pain and stiffness in the back.
• Pain and numbness that radiate to the arms’, hands and fingers.
• Headache that starts from the neck and extends to the back of the head.
• Loss of balance and vertigo (sensation of spinning or whirling with the loss of balance).
Homoeopathy has played a promising role in the treatment of cervical spondylosis. However, the treatment of cervical spondylosis is dependent upon an important factor – the amount of degenerative changes that have taken place in the bones and disc.
• Guaicum, lachnanthes and Rhus Tox are useful medicines in treating pain and stiffness of the neck.
• Paris Quadrifolia and Kalmia Latifolia work wonders for the numbness and pain in arms.
• Calcarea Flour helps in dissolving the bony outgrowths on the vertebrae.
• Conium Maculatum is helpful for treating vertigo associated with cervical spondylosis.
However, as they say ‘Prevention is better than cure’, apart from medication, need to realize the importance of disease prevention is also essential.
As we get more and more absorbed into modern lifestyle like increased working and prolonged driving hours, sitting in front of computer or television for hours, and a sedentary lifestyle lead to increased wear and tear in neck and spine muscles.
Thus, lifestyle modifications is the first step in preventing further degeneration and an early onset of cervical spondylosis.
